AT WHICH SITE WILL I WORK?
Project WILD has two sites: Temple Intermediate School in the Garvey School District and Arlington Heights Elementary School in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Many tutees at the Temple site are of Chinese and Vietnamese backgrounds and may speak Cantonese, Mandarin, and Vietnamese at home while learning English in school. Knowledge of these languages is always helpful, but never required of tutors! Their ages range from first grade to eighth grade. Temple also now has a level for middle schoolers who are alumni of our second to fifth grade program.
Tutees at our Arlington site are mainly Latinx and may speak Spanish at home in addition to learning English in school. and range from second to fifth grade. Arlington also has a large ESL (English as Second Language) level, so we are especially looking for ESL tutors for Arlington who can work more on a one-on-one basis with ESL tutees. Knowledge of Spanish is helpful but not required for Arlington site!

You will be asked on your tutor application which site you prefer, or if you have no preference.
In WHICH LEVEL WILL I WORK?
You will be asked on your tutor application which level you prefer, or if you have no preference. We may ask you to work in a level besides your indicated preference as needed, but we will let you know if this is the case.
ESL (Arlington): The ESL level at Arlington is one of our larger levels, so we are looking for a dedicated team of ESL tutors. The ESL level is also diverse because some tutees in this level speak English and have some writing and reading skills in English while other tutees know little to no English, spoken or written. The Arlington site is comprised mostly of Spanish speakers, so we are looking for Spanish-speaking tutors to work in the ESL level, although this language skill is not required.
Seedlings (Temple): The Seedlings level at Temple, as the name implies, serves younger students, mainly first and second graders, who are not quite ready for Project WILD’s beginning curriculum. If you are interested in tutoring younger tutees and preparing them for moving on to Project WILD’s other levels, this is the level for you.
Beginning: Tutees in the beginning level speak English, but require assistance with writing and reading skills in English. Grammar and spelling is also a focus area in the beginning level. This level has a mix of second to fifth grade tutees.
Intermediate: Tutees in the intermediate level are more proficient in reading and writing in English. Continuing to practice grammar and spelling and improving reading skills are focus areas in this level. This level has a mix of second to fifth graders.
Advanced: Tutees in the advanced level are the most proficient in reading and writing in English of all our tutees. Fine tuning reading, writing and advanced grammar skills are focus areas in this level. This level has a mix of second to fifth graders.

Middle School Level (Temple): The middle school level serves sixth through eighth graders who have graduated from our second to fifth grade program. This level focuses on introducing the middle school tutees to a variety of topics from the social sciences, humanities and sciences. The instruction in this level is a combination of a unique curriculum and presentations directors create for the weekly sites. The middle schoolers also assist our Activities Director in conducting the weekly activities for the younger tutees, introducing the middle schoolers to community service. If you are interested in working with older tutees, this is the level for you.
WHAT WILL I DO AT SITE?
Here is a breakdown of the components of site:
Arrival at Site: When we arrive at site at 9am, tutees are divided into their respective levels with their tutor and head into the classrooms.
Curriculum Portion: From about 9am to 10:30am, tutors guide their tutee groups through the curriculum packet, which includes: reading, writing, grammar and spelling. Tutors should facilitate problem-solving and completion of the curriculum without giving away the answers.
Snack Time: From about 10:30am to 11am, tutee groups will come back together in the designated snack area to eat a healthy snack. During the snack portion, tutors should stay with their tutee groups and encourage conversation both about healthy lifestyles and about tutees’ academic and non-academic interests.
Activity: Each week, we design an interactive activity for our tutees based on our quarterly themes which have included: academic subject of the week, LA history and culture and healthy food and lifestyles. Activity takes place from about 11am to 11:45am. The activities range from arts and crafts to physical activities. During the activity, tutors should stay with their tutee groups and guide them through the activity while encouraging participation and completion.
Lending Library: From 11:45am to 12pm, tutees check out books from our lending library so they can take the books home, read them and complete book reports for prizes the next week. During this portion, tutors should continue to monitor their tutee group while encouraging tutees to check out books.
Parent Pick-Up: Parents pick tutees up at 12pm. During this time, tutors should monitor their tutees and ensure that every parent signs our sign-out sheet before leaving with tutees.
Debrief: After all tutees have been picked up, directors will lead a site debrief where we can discuss what went well at site as well as what we can improve for the next site. After debrief, we head back to UCLA.
